Step-by-step guide to creating your budget Sankey diagram
Welcome to the Cash Flow Visualizer
Managing personal finances can be overwhelming when looking at spreadsheets. The Cash Flow Visualizer solves this by turning your raw numbers into a beautiful, intuitive Sankey diagram. Here is how to get the most out of our free tool.
Step 1: Input Your Income
Start by defining where your money comes from in the Income Sources panel.
- Click + Add Income to add a new revenue stream.
- Enter a source name (e.g., "Salary", "Side Hustle").
- Enter the amount and select the frequency (Monthly or Yearly).
- Use groups to organize multiple sources together for a cleaner chart.
Step 2: Add Your Expenses
Next, map out where your money goes in the Expenses panel.
- Click + Add Expense for each spending category.
- Name your category (e.g., "Rent", "Groceries", "Entertainment").
- Set the amount and frequency. The tool automatically handles conversions if you mix monthly and yearly inputs.
Step 3: Plan Your Savings
Our Saving Planner helps you allocate leftover funds.
- Open the Saving Planner from the sidebar.
- Add Envelopes for different goals (e.g., "Emergency Fund", "Vacation").
- Assign either a fixed amount or a percentage of your remaining unallocated balance.
Step 4: Generate and Analyze
Once your data is entered, click the ⨠Generate Visualization button. Our system will instantly create an interactive Sankey diagram.
- Hover over the flows to see exact amounts and percentages.
- Toggle between Monthly and Yearly views at the top to change the perspective.
- Identify thick lines (large expenses) to find optimization opportunities in your budget.
Step 5: Save and Export
Don't lose your work! We offer several ways to keep your data safe:
- Create an account to automatically save your budget securely in the cloud.
- Use the Export Budget option in the sidebar to download your data as a JSON file.
- Use the Export Graph option to download a high-quality image of your Sankey diagram for presentations or personal records.
